Ovules development in the Dactylorhiza incarnata/maculata complex under experimental conditions. Before anthesis, the ovules contained an archesporial cell (A). Open pollination in the greenhouse failed due to a lack of pollinators (B); however, seed-bags were formed when the plants were grown in an open experimental plot (C). Emasculated flowers that were isolated from pollination, degenerated by day 10, with ovules at the early stages of embryo sac development (D). All types of crossing (EG) accelerated gametogenesis, and embryos and seeds formed successfully.
