Cord lipids mediate some of the association between maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and infant birth weight. (A) Proportion mediation was estimated in causal mediation models, where maternal pp-BMI was the exposure, infant birth weight was the outcome, and cord lipids were the mediator (adjusted for maternal age, infant gestational age, infant sex, and delivery mode). Average causal mediation effect (ACME) = product of the associations between the exposure and mediator, and the mediator and outcome; Total effect = average direct effect (ADE) + ACME; Proportion mediated = ACME/ Total effect. (B) Cord lipids that significantly mediate the association of maternal pp-BMI on birth weight, proportion mediated is plotted with 95% confidence intervals.
