From: Marine reef soundscape monitoring with fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing

The current study was conducted in a degraded inshore reef near the shoreline of KAUST (Thuwal, Saudi Arabia), with scattered boulders and encrusting sponges. Inset: Optical fiber stripped of its protective jacket. Acoustic signals from reef inhabitants cause perturbations in the fiber, resulting in variations in the backscattered Rayleigh signal.
