  1. Continuous variables were expressed as ¥ median (IQR) or mean (SD) and categorical data were expressed as number of participants n (% within the one group).
  2. Independent sample t-test was used for comparison between normally distributed continuous variables, independent sample Mann-Whitney U test for non-normally distributed continuous variables, and Chi square test was used for categorical variables.
  3. Underweight: subjects’ BMI < 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: subjects’ BMI 18.5–24.9 kg/m2, overweight: subjects’ BMI 25.0–29.9 kg/m2 and obese: subjects’ BMI > 29.9 kg/m2.
  4. Enlarged WC: males’ WC > 102 cm and females’ WC > 88 cm.
  5. BMI: Body Mass Index; WC: Waist Circumference.
  6. *p < 0.05 Within group (male vs. female within case, male vs. female within control).
  7. **p < 0.01Within group (male vs. female within case, male vs. female within control).
  8. #p < 0.05 Between groups (same sex: case vs. control).
