Compartment model for tracers and unlabelled glucose (Based on [20]). Gastrointestinal (GI) absorption flux into the plasma compartment, represented by the rate constant k1; loss, loss flux from the GI compartment, represented by the rate constant kL. Both tracer and unlabelled glucose in the plasma compartment can be cleared from the circulation, represented by the rate constant k2. Endogenous glucose production (EGP) by the liver feeds into the unlabelled glucose pool in the plasma. Insulin enhances the clearance of both tracer and glucose and inhibits the EGP. The apparent absorption constant ka obtained from the tracer curves equals k1 + kL.
