Overview of three nozzle types for liquid sample injection with indicated jets: gas dynamic virtual nozzle (GDVN), double-flow focusing nozzle (DFFN) and triple-flow focusing nozzle (TFFN). GDVNs accelerate the liquid sample via coaxial gas-focusing, which forms the thin liquid jet. DFFNs additionally employ a stabilizing sheath flow prior to gas-focusing. TFFNs are DFFNs combined with a micromixer, which sits upstream of the nozzle and allows the diffusion of reactants into the sample stream for time-resolved studies.
