The majority of THCA tumors harbor unbalanced process 1 (a), while the majority of SKCM tumors harbor unbalanced process 2 (c). Unbalanced processes 1 and 2 are shown in panels b and d. Note that red proteins are upregulated, and blue proteins are downregulated given that the amplitude of the process is positive. In tumors where the amplitude is negative, the direction of change is opposite. e A 2D plot showing λ2(k) against λ1(k) for all SKCM and THCA patients. The plot shows nicely the separation between SKCM and THCA patients in this 2D space. Note, however, that every tumor is characterized by a set of unbalanced processes (a PaSSS), and that unbalanced processes 1 and 2 alone do not suffice to describe the complete tumor-specific altered signaling signatures.
