a, Grain yield (Mg ha−1). b, Duration (d). c, Plant height (cm). d, Regrowth rate (%). e, Panicle number m−2. f, Spikelet number panicle−1. g, Grain weight (mg). h, Seed setting rate (%). Field trial locations were double cropping paddy areas in Jinghong (21°59′ N, 100°44′ E, 550 m), Menglian (22°33′ N, 99°59′ E, 960 m), Mengzhe (21°57′ N, 100°14′ E, 1,255 m) and Xinping (24°02′ N, 101°34′ E, 600 m) and a single cropping paddy area in Lancang (22°26′ N, 99°58′ E, 1,020 m). F1–F2 represent the first seasons of years 1–2. S1–S2 represent the second seasons of years 1–2. The data are means from Experiment 4, with l.s.d. for the traits being: a) 1.2; b) 17; c) 15; d) 1; e) 81; f) 29; g) 2; and h) 7 (N = 42; P < 0.05) (see Supplementary Table 5).
