Schematic representation of the tasks. Participants were asked to fixate the white dot. In separate blocks they either a judged which of two sequentially presented patches moved faster or disappeared closer to the fixation point or b tried to tap on the patch as it passed the fixation point. Targets moved horizontally (black arrow) towards the fixation point. They could have embedded motion in the same direction as the patch (blue arrow) or in the opposite direction than the patch (red arrow)
