  1. Subjects were from two experiments with independent manipulation of access to protected nest sites and outgroup competition. Results are shown from a linear mixed model. Relative time spent in the nest was calculated as the difference in the proportion of total time spent in the nest by each subject. Experimental treatments (protected nest site availability and outgroup competition) and experiment (1 or 2) did not influence relative time spent in the nest and were dropped from the final model. To obtain p-values an F-test was used to compare models with and without the factor of interest. Values in bolded text are statistically significant (P < 0.05). N = 15 sister dyads across eight blocks and two experiments.
