  1. Groundwater samples were collected and filtered on 3 September 2022. Two filters were combined during DNA extraction to increase the yield, except for the negative control sample. The DNA yield is presented as the amount of DNA extracted standardized by the volume of groundwater filtered (ng L−1). The reported bacterial and archaeal abundances (mean ± sd, n = 3) were quantified using qPCR, targeting the 16S rRNA gene. The number of gene copies in the control sample were below detection limit (BD; ΔCq with no-template controls below 3).
