Precipitation ranges from 192 to 1877 mm (N = 116; A) and the soil total nitrogen content ranges from a site mean of 0.2 to 12.0 g kg−1 (N = 55; B). The quadratic models were calculated based on the site-level data (and not the plot-level data, which are shown to give insight into the variability). APB was log-transformed using the natural logarithm.
