Aberrant accumulation of misfolded SOD1 leads to increased expression of Type I and II IFN-inducible genes. Among these genes, a subset dependent on STAT1 activation, including ATF3, CXCL9, and ZFP36, show enhanced expression across different ALS stages. These genes primarily serve anti-inflammatory functions, acting as negative feedback loops to regulate the cytokine storm.
