The instantaneous microbial influx in early postnatal life induces the recruitment of APCs to the conjunctival epithelium and activates cross-talk between APCs and antigens via GAPs. Topical antibiotic exposure in early postnatal life disrupts mucosal homeostasis and leads to the ocular surface to become more susceptible to AED.
