We compare four different techniques using (a) fluorescence, (b) brightfield, (c) phase-contrast, and (d) DIC. Yellow arrows indicate temporarily immobile cells, and pale-blue arrows indicate moving cells. Only DIC (d) reveals the temporarily immobile cells at even a high frame rate (50 frames/s; exposure time = 0.02 s).
