RE(III) concentration boundary layer development 20 sec after the magnet is applied to Sm(III), Ho(III) and Er(III) solutions with initial concentration of 1 M. The magnetic field and measurement system used is the same in Fig. 1. A PC88A concentration of 2 M is used for the heavy rare earths, Er(III) and Ho (III); whereas 1 M for both PC88A and Sm(III) is used for the less magnetically susceptible light rare earth Sm(III). The color bar spans the range -10 to 10 mM, while the black line represents the scale bar of 1 mm. They are identical for all three RE(III) species and are referenced to the Sm(III) distribution at 4 s.
