In the version of the article initially published, in the second paragraph of the section “A robust method to measure and analyse the carbon footprint of research”, there was an error in unit size: in the text now reading “On average, in 2019, a size-corrected research unit emitted about 935 t CO2 equivalent”, the text incorrectly read “935 Mt CO2”. This has now been corrected in the HTML and PDF versions of the article.
