Simulations are performed with the ICON ocean model (https://www.dkrz.de/de/kommunikation/galerie/Vis/ozean/icon-ocean-experiments). Note the Western Boundary currents, and turbulent flow in the tropical Pacific and near the South tip of Africa, features that have only recently been resolved in models.
