Overall correlation between intracellular nitrate (ICNO3) and fucoxanthin (a diatom marker pigment) across habitat types and climate zones. Total ICNO3 and fucoxanthin contents are expressed per unit volume of the respective habitat. The correlation is described by the power function: ICNO3 (µmol L−1) = 3.77 × Fucoxanthin (µmol L−1)0.75 (R2 = 0.864, p < 0.001, n = 654). Inset shows frequency distribution (in %) of samples in which intracellular nitrate (N) and fucoxanthin (F) were detected (+) or not detected (–).
