a–f Particulate organic carbon (POC) export fluxes (grey circles) were measured using sediment traps; the solid black lines and crosses correspond to regression curves (power law function)5 fitted to the data with the depth of the shallowest trap as reference depth for fluxes out of the mixed layer (Fz0). Also shown are temperature (blue) and oxygen concentration (red) profiles, the depth of the mixed layer (MLD; dashed line) and the extent of the OMZ (purple shading; <15 µmol O2 kg−1).
