Enhancing photon pair generation with Quasi-BIC metasurfaces

Researchers have designed a lithium niobate metasurface that boosts the generation of entangled photon pairs by aligning dual resonances with signal and idler frequencies. This theoretical design promises compact, high-Q quantum light sources for advanced quantum communication and photonic integration.

The generation of entangled photon pairs is a cornerstone of quantum technology, yet traditional photonic structures often face limitations owing to their bulkiness and inefficiency in modulating entangled photon states. Advancements in nanofabrication have enabled the miniaturization of photonic structures, opening new avenues for exploring quantum phenomena. Now, writing in Optics Express, Changqing Zhong et al. present a theoretical work on a nonlinear metasurface design that enhances the generation of entangled photon pairs through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), an important process for quantum optics.
