a Time-scaled phylogenetic tree of TiLV and TiLV-like segment 9 sequences (n = 46). Phylogeny was inferred using BEAST. Tip points are coloured according to the presence (red) or absence (black) of an upstream AUG in the S9 ORF. Asterisks denote sequences with a truncated S9-F3 ORF. Bars to the right annotate host species, country, and continent of origin. b Analysis of translation initiation context for TiLV S9 and S9-F3. Segment 9 sequences were aligned and the Kozak consensus sequence surrounding potential AUG initiation codons for S9 and S9-F3 were examined and colour-coded according to predicted translation initiation strength as previously described. Codons with undefined Kozak consensus are shown in grey, and those lacking an AUG are in light blue. No segment with an uAUG had sufficient UTR sequence reported to define a Kozak consensus.
