Cement production is a major source of CO2 emissions, which are difficult to abate owing to the manufacturing processes. However, any changes to increase cement production sustainability must also ensure that the cement meets rigorous standards meant to guarantee safety and performance. One immediate strategy to increase sustainability is therefore to reduce the amount of material waste from current processes that arises from out-of-specification materials.

Incorporating use of such a model into industrial processes could help to reduce clinker wastage by providing real-time information on the clinker being produced (conventional strategies often occur after production). If out of specification, manufacturers could adjust their processes quickly and potentially allow for more efficient operational conditions (such as by lowering fuel consumption for a given clinker output).
