The leftmost panels show typical time-evolutions of periodic and aperiodic (“chaotic”) waveforms x(t).

The labels A, B and C refer to parameters indicated by dots inside the fish-like structures in Fig. [5](a) and correspond to antiperiodic oscillations4. The labels a and b, corresponding to points a and b shown in Fig. [5](a), refer to chaotic oscillations. The rightmost panels in A, B and C show (in red) experimental return maps x(tmax) × x(tmax+1), while all other (blue) panels refer to numerically obtained time evolutions of x(t) and their corresponding return maps. Time is measured in ms.
