(A) The profibrotic cytokines TGFβ1 and TNFα can induce WISP1 presumably via NF-κB in phLFs, which results in WISP1-dependent IL-6 production and increased proliferation of phLFs. (B) In the absence of WISP1, decreased IL-6 levels lead to reduced fibroblast proliferation. Our working hypothesis is that WISP1 controls IL-6 expression via a positive feedback on NF-κB.
