A fresh twist for self-assembly

Molecular helicity affects many of the bulk properties of materials. A study finds that helicity also controls the self-assembly of colloidal particles, opening the door to a new generation of functional materials. See Letter p.348

X-ray nanotomography of coccolithophores reveals that coccolith mass and segment number correlate with grid size

Coccolithophores are one of the most abundant phytoplankton and calcifying organisms, well-known to produce intricate calcareous exoskeletons made of coccoliths. Here the authors show, by using X-ray nanotomography, the dependence of the grid size on the calcite nucleation site number and on the mass of coccoliths.

Ultrastructure of the axonal periodic scaffold reveals a braid-like organization of actin rings

The ultrastructural details of the periodic scaffold of actin rings under the plasma membrane of axons remain unknown. Here, the authors combine platinum-replica electron and optical super-resolution microscopy and resolve actin rings as braids made of two long, intertwined actin filaments connected by a dense mesh of aligned spectrins.

Mechanistic basis of the dynamic response of TWIK1 ionic selectivity to pH

Using computer simulations authors identify the dynamic molecular motions controlling the structural conformation of the TWIK1 ion channel, showing that its ability to transport sodium upon acidification result from the evolution of the classical potassium-selective pore.
