A scalable membrane electrode assembly architecture for efficient electrochemical conversion of CO₂ to formic acid

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formic acid is a promising and sustainable pathway for valuable chemical generation. However, direct production of formic acid rather than formate is challenging. Herein the authors report a zero-gap membrane electrode assembly architecture with perforated cation exchange membrane for the direct electrochemical synthesis of formic acid from CO2.

Effectively suppressing dissolution of manganese from spinel lithium manganate via a nanoscale surface-doping approach

Dissolution of manganese from the cathode in lithium manganate based batteries is a major cause for the capacity decay. Here, the authors show a nanoscale surface-doping approach to mitigate the problem and to improve the battery capacity and cycleability.

Atomically dispersed iron sites with a nitrogen–carbon coating as highly active and durable oxygen reduction catalysts for fuel cells

Fe–N–C materials are promising oxygen reduction catalysts for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells but still lack sufficient long-term durability for practical applications. Here the authors fabricate an Fe–N–C material with a thin N–C layer on the surface, leading to a highly durable and active catalyst.

Mn(II) deposition on anodes and its effects on capacity fade in spinel lithium manganate–carbon systems

Lithium manganate is an important cathode material for lithium-ion batteries; however, its capacity-fading mechanism is unclear. Zhan et al. identify the oxidation state of manganese deposited on the anode, which leads to an irreversible rising in anode resistance and consequently a shortened battery life.

A stable, low-temperature water–gas shift catalyst is achieved by crowding platinum atoms and clusters on α-molybdenum carbide; the crowding protects the support from oxidation that would cause catalyst deactivation.

Performance enhancement and degradation mechanism identification of a single-atom Co–N–C catalyst for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Platinum-group-metal-free, non-iron catalysts are highly desirable for the oxygen reduction reaction at proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell cathodes, as they avoid the detrimental Fenton reactions. Now, a cobalt and nitrogen co-doped carbon catalyst with atomically dispersed porphyrin-like CoN₄C₁₂ sites is reported with an improved activity and durability in PEM fuel cell conditions.

Breaking the scaling relationship via thermally stable Pt/Cu single atom alloys for catalytic dehydrogenation

Enhancing the catalytic activity of noble-metal alloys is frequently accompanied by side reactions. Here, the authors describe an approach to break the scaling relationship for propane dehydrogenation, by assembling single atom alloys, to achieve simultaneous enhancement of propylene selectivity and propane conversion.
