Magnon spectroscopy in the electron microscope

A method combining scanning transmission electron microscopy with high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy enables the observation of magnons and their dispersion, and provides a way to examine magnetic inhomogeneities with nanometre spatial resolution.

Mutations in DNA polymerase δ subunit 1 co-segregate with CMD2-type resistance to Cassava Mosaic Geminiviruses

Cassava mosaic disease is caused by geminiviruses and suppresses cassava yields throughout the tropics. Here, the authors show that mutations in MePOLD1, encoding DNA polymerase δ subunit 1, co-segregate with CMD2, the major source of genetic resistance for this disease.

Correlating fluorescence microscopy, optical and magnetic tweezers to study single chiral biopolymers such as DNA

It is hard to correlate force, torque and localization information. The authors report Combined Optical and Magnetic BIomolecule TWEEZers, COMBI-Tweez, that integrates optical trapping, time-resolved electromagnetic tweezers, and fluorescence microscopy: they demonstrate visualisation of higher order structural motifs in DNA.

Giant converse magnetoelectric effect in a multiferroic heterostructure with polycrystalline Co₂FeSi

We show giant converse magnetoelectric effect in a multiferroic heterostructure consisting of ferromagnetic Heusler alloy Co₂FeSi and ferroelectric-oxide Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O₃-PbTiO₃ for an electric-field control of magnetization vectors. In this system, the non-volatile and repeatable magnetization vector switchings in remanent states are also demonstrated. This approach can lead to a new solution to the reduction in the write power in spintronic memory architectures at room temperature.
