The chromatin modifier SMC1A is an X-linked gene that escapes X-chromosome inactivation. Here, the authors report SMC1A overexpression in the monocytes of female patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and propose that, in response to SLE stimuli, SMC1A preferentially binds and activates key inflammatory genes, highlighting its role as a transcriptional and functional regulator of immune cells in autoimmunity.
