  • The mechanisms underlying the maturation of learning and memory abilities are poorly understood. Here, authors show that episodic learning produces persistent neuronal activation, BDNF-dependent increase in excitatory synapse markers (synaptophysin and PSD-95), and significant maturation of AMPA receptor synaptic responses in the hippocampus of infant rats and mice compared to juveniles and adults.

  • Infantile amnesia is the forgetting of memories in young children. In this paper, the authors show that in rats early life memories are not lost but rather stored in a latent form that can be retrieved later during adult life following exposure to appropriate reminders. The formation of these early memories requires the hippocampus and is subject to a developmental critical period that depends on mechanisms similar to those underlying critical periods in sensory systems.

  • The authors show that a direct pathway from the dorsal hippocampus to the prelimbic cortex is necessary for contextual fear memory strengthening. Molecular analyses and functional targeting revealed that prelimbic excitatory and inhibitory synapses have a critical role in promoting memory strengthening, while inhibiting extinction.
