  • The spontaneous ordering of molecules into two-dimensional arrays is usually a result of directional intermolecular interactions. Here, it is shown that electrospray-deposited Mn12(acetate)16forms filamentary aggregates driven by anisotropic interactions, which are a consequence of the complex shape of the molecule.

  • Mesomeso linked porphyrin arrays have been described as rod-like photonic wires. Now it has been shown that they can be bent into rings using template-directed synthesis. These rings of porphyrins mimic the light-harvesting arrays of chlorophyll molecules responsible for photosynthesis.

  • The insertion of metal atoms and heteroaromatic units provides a way to tune the optical, electronic and magnetic properties of graphene nanoribbons. Now the synthesis of a porphyrin-fused graphene nanoribbon with a narrow bandgap and high charge mobility has been achieved, and this material used to fabricate field-effect and single-electron transistors.

  • Templates are widely used to arrange molecular components so they can be covalently linked into complex molecules that are not readily accessible by classical synthetic methods. But, as larger structures are targeted, the synthesis of the templates themselves becomes challenging. It is now shown that 'molecular Verniers' can solve this problem: using a template with six binding sites and molecular building blocks with four porphyrins acting as binding sites, a 12-porphyrin nano-ring with a diameter of 4.7 nm is created. The ease and efficiency of this synthesis establishes Vernier templating as a powerful new strategy for producing large monodisperse macromolecules.

  • The chemical nature of molecules encapsulated within fullerenes remain debated, with reports proposing a Faraday cage effect. Here, the authors show that H2O and HF molecules encapsulated inside a C60 cage experience a substantial intra-cage electrostatic interaction that results in off-center locations; despite this, the endofullerene’s frontier orbitals is unaffected, resulting in chemical shielding of the caged molecule.
