Tunable molecular separation by nanoporous membranes

The tunable pore size and functionalization of metal-organic frameworks offers great potential for efficient and selective separation of molecular mixtures. Here, the authors report a metal-organic membrane containing photoresponsive linkers which offers a dynamic control of selectivity by remote signals

Solution processable metal–organic frameworks for mixed matrix membranes using porous liquids

Solution processability is required for many industrial processes, but metal–organic frameworks are in general not dispersible, hindering their application. Here, a surface modification is reported that allows porous liquid formation and so synthesis of highly loaded and mechanically robust mixed matrix membranes.

Precise control over gas-transporting channels in zeolitic imidazolate framework glasses

Porosity of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks can be preserved beyond glass transition and melt processing. Here centimetre-scale porous glasses are demonstrated, whereas liquid processing enables fine-tuning of the size of the gas-transporting channels for molecular sieving.

Micro-optical elements from optical-quality ZIF-62 hybrid glasses by hot imprinting

Hybrid MOF-glasses can be shaped and processed in analogy to conventional glasses. Here, microstructures are formed by thermal imprinting, whilst preserved porosity of the material enables its further use in responsive optics.

This critical Review discusses the molecular sieving behaviour of metal–organic framework and covalent organic framework membranes as thin supported layers and mixed-matrix membranes. This behaviour is different from that of classical zeolite membranes.
