  • Magnetocaloric materials are used in adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators to reach extremely low temperature without using Helium. Here, the authors report a large magnetocaloric effect in YbPt2Sn, and show how the properties of this alloy makes it a good magnetocaloric material.

  • In the superconductor Sr2RuO4, in-plane strain is known to enhance both the superconducting transition temperature Tc and upper critical field Hc2, but the effect of out-of-plane strain has not been studied. Here, the authors find that Hc2 is enhanced under out-of-plane strain, but Tc unexpectedly decreases.

  • Denoising low-counting statistics data in the presence of multiple, unknown noise profiles is a challenging task in scientific applications where high accuracy is required. Oppliger and colleagues train a deep convolutional neural network on pairs of experimental low- and high-noise X-ray diffraction data and demonstrate better performance on experimental noise filtering compared with the case of training on artificial data pairs.
