The gradual expansion of Northern Hemisphere glaciation about 3.6 million years ago followed a period of prolonged warmth. An analysis of ancient sea surface temperatures fuels the debate surrounding the roles of atmospheric carbon dioxide and global circulation in the cooling.

Five million years of Antarctic Circumpolar Current strength variability

The strength of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, as traced in sediment cores from the Pacific Southern Ocean, shows no linear long-term trend over the past 5.3 Myr; instead, the strongest flow occurs consistently in warmer-than-present intervals.

High Earth-system climate sensitivity determined from Pliocene carbon dioxide concentrations

Earth-system climate sensitivity includes the effects of long-term feedbacks such as changes in continental ice-sheet extent and terrestrial ecosystems. A reconstruction of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels 4.5 million years ago suggests that Earth-system climate sensitivity is significantly higher than that estimated from global climate models, which includes only fast feedback mechanisms such as changes in clouds and sea ice.

Middle Pleistocene re-organization of Australian Monsoon

The response of monsoons to climate change remains uncertain. Here, the authors show that the Australian Summer Monsoon was primarily driven by insolation forcing but exhibited high sensitivity to ice volume and pCO₂ after ~0.95 Ma. By contrast, wind-driven winter productivity tracked glacial-interglacial variability over the past 1.6 Myr.

Closure of the Bering Strait caused Mid-Pleistocene Transition cooling

The causes of Mid-Pleistocene Transition global cooling 1 million years ago are still unknown. Here, the authors find the subarctic North Pacific became stratified during these glaciations due to closure of the Bering Strait, which would have removed CO₂ from the atmosphere and caused global cooling.

Modulation of late Pleistocene ENSO strength by the tropical Pacific thermocline

How the El Niño Southern Oscillation depends on the background conditions is not well known. Here, the authors present individual foraminifera distributions which show that central Pacific variability is related to the warmth and depth of the thermocline across varying climate background conditions over the past ~285,000 years.
