Non-chondritic iron isotope ratios in planetary mantles as a result of core formation

Planetary materials reveal variation in iron isotope composition across planetary bodies. Experiments suggest that this variation can be explained by varying degrees of fractionation during core formation, depending on temperature.

Perturbed N-glycosylation of Halobacterium salinarum archaellum filaments leads to filament bundling and compromised cell motility

The archaellum, or archaeal ‘flagellum’, includes asparagine-linked glycans that are important for efficient cell motility in archaea through unclear mechanisms. Here, the authors show that glycan truncation leads to clustering of filaments and alterations in cell motility, suggesting that the glycans minimize archaellum filament aggregation that compromises cell motility.

Allosteric amyloid catalysis by coiled coil fibrils

Amyloid fibrils assembled by an alternating lysine/phenylalanine peptide exhibit remarkable catalytic properties for β-lactam antibiotic hydrolysis. Specifically, the fibrils adopt coiled-coil structure underscoring an allosteric catalytic mechanism.

Acetylation-dependent coupling between G6PD activity and apoptotic signaling

Lysine acetylation is highly prevalent in metabolic enzymes. Here, the authors highlight the diverse roles of acetylation and show that G6PD acetylation can activate/deactivate G6PD, and promote G6PD ubiquitylation and phosphorylation, its interaction with p53, and p53-dependent pro-apoptotic events.

Directed elimination of senescent cells by inhibition of BCL-W and BCL-XL

The accumulation of senescent cells within tissues plays a role in numerous age-related pathologies. Yosef and Pilpel et al. demonstrate that the resistance of these cells to apoptosis is driven by upregulation of survival proteins, whose pharmacological inhibition triggers senescent cell elimination in mice.
