Alice Burghard et al. record auditory brainstem responses from guinea pigs during the presentation of paired noise bursts separated by a short gap. The responses obtained can be categorized into two groups based on the leading noise burst and the following gap duration, suggesting that categorical processing of temporal sequences can occur already in the brainstem.
