Microbial magnetosymbiosis has rarely been reported and is poorly studied. Here, the authors describe this symbiosis in a ciliate that acquires magnetic navigation through endosymbiotic bacteria with reduced genomes that produce magnetite crystals, allowing the host to move efficiently in stratified waters.
