In this work, researchers developed an approach to quantify how often DNA adopts a rare, mutagenic conformation, the anionic Watson–Crick-like G•T mismatch, across all possible sequence contexts. Using 19F NMR spectroscopy, they discovered that the likelihood of forming this state varies by up to 50-fold depending on neighboring bases.
