FabT represses fatty acid synthesis in Streptococcus pyogenes, which compensates by incorporating environmental lipids. Here, Lambert et al. show that emerging fabT mutants avoid lipid induced mortality, but at a cost: fabT mutants gain a fitness advantage yet are non-infectious.
