Time-dependent neural arbitration between cue associative and episodic fear memories

Here, the authors show a time-dependent shift from generalised cue associations to specific episodic coding of fearful memories. An overnight rebalancing between hippocampal and prefrontal control of the fear regulatory circuit governs this shift.

Fear reduction without fear through reinforcement of neural activity that bypasses conscious exposure

Koizumi and colleagues show that it is possible to reduce fear without explicit representations of feared objects by pairing rewards with activation patterns in the visual cortex that represent a conditioned stimulus, while participants remain unaware of the purpose of the procedure.
