Acute lung injury is a serious side effect of cardiopulmonary bypass. This study reveals that Nlrp3 inflammasome/ASC adaptor-mediated alveolar macrophage pyroptosis increases high-mobility group box 1 secretion in acute lung injury induced by cardiopulmonary bypass. These findings may provide a therapeutic strategy to reduce lung injury and inflammatory responses resulting from bypass surgery.
