Environmental justice and drinking water in the US: Higher proportions of Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaskan Native, and non-Hispanic Black residents were associated with higher public water arsenic and uranium at the county-level, findings differed by region.

Sulfate reduction accelerates groundwater arsenic contamination even in aquifers with abundant iron oxides

Low-arsenic aquifers are considered safeguarded against contamination as long as iron reduction does not occur. Combining field experiments in Bangladesh with reactive transport modelling, this study reveals that limited sulfate reduction instead can accelerate groundwater arsenic contamination.

Iron solubility driven by speciation in dust sources to the ocean

Particulate aerosols are thought to be the primary source of iron to the oceans, but the factors determining their solubility, and thus bioavailability, are unclear. X-ray absorption analysis reveals that speciation controls the solubility of iron in three large sources of aerosol iron.

Arsenic contamination of Bangladesh aquifers exacerbated by clay layers

Generally it is thought that confining clay layers provide protection to low-arsenic groundwaters against intrusion of shallower, high-arsenic groundwater bodies. Here, the authors show that impermeable clay layers can increase arsenic input to underlying groundwater systems due to reduction of iron oxides coupled to carbon oxidation.

Megacity pumping and preferential flow threaten groundwater quality

Megacities rely on groundwater from aquifers that may be over-exploited and be at risk of contamination. Khan et al. evaluate the complex aquifers supplying Dhaka, Bangladesh and show that extensive groundwater pumping could lead to unpredictable future arsenic contamination in deep aquifers outside the city.

The contribution of rainfall to groundwater recharge in the Bengal Basin has decreased in the last 70 years along with an increased contribution from standing water bodies, according to statistical analyses of groundwater stable isotope measurements.
