An auto-inducible mechanism for ionic liquid resistance in microbial biofuel production

Ionic liquids (ILs) are important solvents in the microbial production of biofuels, but can inhibit microbial growth. Here, the authors transfer newly discovered IL-resistance genes from rain forest soil bacteria to E. coliand report growth and biofuel production at IL levels that are otherwise toxic to native strains.

An iron (II) dependent oxygenase performs the last missing step of plant lysine catabolism

Hydroxyglutarate synthase (HglS) converts 2-oxoadipate to D-2- hydroxyglutarate during lysine catabolism in bacteria. Here the authors use structural and biochemical approaches to show that HglS acts via successive decarboxylation and intramolecular hydroxylation and that homologous enzymes catalyze the final step of lysine catabolism in plants.

Differential PROTAC substrate specificity dictated by orientation of recruited E3 ligase

PROTACs enable targeted protein degradation by recruiting an E3 ligase to a specific substrate but the determinants of selectivity are not fully understood. Here, the authors show that varying the linker between warhead and E3 ligand and the orientation of the E3 ligase allow tuning PROTAC selectivity toward different p38 isoforms.

Ascl1a regulates Müller glia dedifferentiation and retinal regeneration through a Lin-28-dependent, let-7 microRNA signalling pathway

Fish retinal regeneration starts with the dedifferentiation of glia cells into progenitors. Following injury, the proneural transcription factor, Ascl1a, upregulates the pluripotency factor Lin-28, which in turn prevents let-7 microRNA-mediated inhibition of regeneration-associated genes.
