Structural differences between the closely related RNA helicases, UAP56 and URH49, fashion distinct functional apo-complexes

UAP56 is an important factor in the TREX complex, which is responsible for mRNA export. Here the authors show that the closely related RNA helicases, UAP56 and URH49, exhibit different three-dimensional structures due to one amino acid change. Accordingly, they form distinct apo-complexes and function in the nuclear export of specific target mRNAs.

A common allosteric mechanism regulates homeostatic inactivation of auxin and gibberellin

Enzymatic inactivation of gibberellins and auxin, via GA2ox3 and DAO respectively, contributes to hormone homeostasis in plants. Here Takehara et al. show that both enzymes multimerize in a substrate-concentration-dependent manner, and that this multimerization leads to increased enzyme activity.

Crystal structure of the N-myristoylated lipopeptide-bound MHC class I complex

Lipid antigens have been added to the antigenic repertoire in recent years. Here, the authors have identified Mamu-B*098 as a lipopeptide antigen presenting molecule and using structural and biochemical analysis have shown that it has a different antigen binding pocket to previously analysed proteins.

Evolutionary alterations in gene expression and enzymatic activities of gibberellin 3-oxidase 1 in Oryza

The authors solve the crystal structure of OsGA3ox2 and predict that of OsGA3ox1. These enzymes catalyze the final step in the biosynthesis of gibberellin, one of the plant hormones. Evolutionary analysis combined with the new structure reveal important aspects of the OsGA3ox1’s function in plant male reproduction.

A three-component monooxygenase from Rhodococcus wratislaviensis may expand industrial applications of bacterial enzymes

Makoto Hibi et al. report a novel three-component monooxygenase system in Rhodococcus wratislaviensis. This enzyme catalyzes the activation of an inert C–H bond and may be potentially important as a biocatalyst for industrial applications.
