  • Ultrafast metrology typically relies on pulse coherence, but full coherence is not always possible in emerging attosecond and ultrashort X-ray technologies. Here, Bourassin-Bouchet and Couprie adapt frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) to measure partially coherent optical pulses in the attosecond scale.

  • Experimentally probing the dynamics of laser–plasma interactions is hard, owing to the nature of the relevant temporal and spatial scales at play. Ptychography, a phase-problem solving technique, can help the analysis of such interaction measurements.

  • Electron beam quality in accelerators is crucial for light source application. Here the authors demonstrate beam conditioning of laser plasma electrons thanks to a specific transport line enabling the control of divergence, energy, steering and dispersion and the application to observe undulator radiation.

  • Photoelectron quantum-state tomography is demonstrated in helium and argon atoms upon the absorption of ultrashort, extreme ultraviolet light pulses. The purity and degree of entanglement of a mixed photoelectron and ion state are quantified following coherent two-photon ionization using an extreme ultraviolet pulse and two infrared pulses.
