Dynamic behaviour of the East Antarctic ice sheet during Pliocene warmth

The East Antarctic ice sheet is considered to be largely insensitive to temperature changes in the Southern Ocean. Marine sediment records indicate the East Antarctic ice sheet repeatedly retreated by several hundred kilometres during intervals of Pliocene warmth.

Orbital forcing of the East Antarctic ice sheet during the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene

The volume of the East Antarctic ice sheet is influenced by changes in the Earth’s orbit. Ice-rafted debris accumulation between 4.3 and 2.2 million years ago suggests precession affected the extent of the marine margins of the ice sheet.

Persistent near-tropical warmth on the Antarctic continent during the early Eocene epoch

A reconstruction of temperatures along the Wilkes Land coast of Antarctica during the early Eocene epoch shows that the climate supported the growth of near-tropical forests and that winters were very mild and essentially frost-free.
