Astrocytes are increasingly implicated in neural circuit function and brain disorders, yet how altered astrocyte states affect cognition remains unclear. Here, the authors show that astrocyte-derived kynurenic acid impairs cognition in mice by suppressing prefrontal inhibitory interneurons.
