  • A convincing explanation of why mixed phases of anatase and rutile TiO2 outperform individual polymorphs is lacking. An energetic band alignment of ~0.4 eV is now shown to exist between the two phases with anatase possessing the higher electron affinity. This observation explains the separation of photoexcited charge carriers between phases and could lead to improved photocatalysts.

  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) features lichenoid cutaneous inflammation and scarring hair loss. Here, Tziotzios et al. identify four genetic loci associated with FFA by GWAS followed by Bayesian fine-mapping, co-localisation and HLA imputation which highlights HLA-B*07:02 as a risk factor.

  • Lithium nitride is the only stable binary alkali metal-nitrogen compound and shows promise for energy applications involving the transport of lithium ions. Here, the authors demonstrate that lithium nitride nanostructures can be grown as fibres and sheets despite the absence of a van der Waals gap.
