Graphite anodes are prone to consumption and fragmentation during magnesium electrolysis, disrupting normal operation and releasing greenhouse gases. Here, the authors report a continuous, carbon-free approach using stable argon plasma as the anode, showing that the presence of Ar+, which increases with current, facilitates chloride oxidation during magnesium molten salt electrolysis.
