High-surface-area functionalized nanolaminated membranes for energy-efficient nanofiltration and desalination in forward osmosis

One of the problems of water-treatment membranes based on two-dimensional materials is that they tend to swell once in operation in water. A new strategy is presented for the preparation of non-swelling, covalently functionalized molybdenum disulfide membranes with tunable interlayer space and cohesion energy of the laminates.

Enhanced sieving from exfoliated MoS₂ membranes via covalent functionalization

Layered 2D sheets can present impressive molecular sieving properties, but suffer from limited water stability. Here, a membrane composed of MoS₂ sheets functionalized by hydrophobic groups displays stability and high performance for desalination under reverse osmosis.
